A fourteen-hour series that examines the major historical events of the twentieth century from some of the prominent people who lived during it.
Julian Schlossberg, veteran film and Broadway producer, had an idea.
He would videotape all the influential figures of the last century and, using film clips, newsreel footage and archival material, edit eyewitness accounts of history into a decade by decade chronology as told by the history makers themselves. It was to be a fourteen hour series.
It was a race against time. These legends were, for the most part, well past 75! But Julian convinced 140 of them to sit down and share their unique point of view. For several, this was the last interview they ever did. And perhaps, most surprisingly, none asked, "How is this going to be used?", "Where will this air?", or "Do I get approval of the 'cut'?" They simply welcomed the opportunity to look back on their lives with the perspective only time can give.
Presidents, generals, newscasters, authors, ambassadors, archbishops, governors and senators, congresspeople, journalists, playwrights, cabinet members, actors, singers, architects, and titans of industry...some agreed to thirty minutes and stayed for hours. Others called back to schedule additional time to talk about some issue that hadn't been covered. To a person, they were remarkably candid and brought unexpected insight into the events that shaped the world we live in today.
The award winning writer Elaine May (The Birdcage, Primary Colors) has written the commentary.
